My old blue spruce tree is dying, can I save it?
I’ve got a blue spruce tree that is a good 24-30 foot high and getting near 30 years old. Noticed that a single branch in the top of the tree died initially but I recently trimmed up the bottom and now I think I just accelerated the death process as 1/3rd of it is dead now. Some of the needles still look somewhat healthy though…is there anyway to save it? Some kind of nutrient supplement maybe?
Generally, by the time someone notices a tree is in trouble, it’s probably pretty well on its way out. Your local master gardeners, extension service, or a consulting arborist may be able to id the problem, but chances are the tree will die anyhow.
Many tree deaths are attributable to root damage or going into the winter too dry, and it’s not unusual to have the problem that started the decline of the tree occur 2-5 years before the tree looks to be in trouble.
